Full-Arch Implants

When most or all of your teeth are missing or failing, a fixed full arch on dental implants gives you a permanent, natural-looking set of teeth. At The JM Dental we restore each arch on six to eight implants and a strong, lifelike zirconia bridge, built to last.

Dr. Joseph Mina Atalla, ICOI Diplomate implant specialist, at The JM Dental

At The JM Dental in Orange County, full-arch treatment is led by Dr. Joseph Mina Atalla, a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) and an Expert in Oral Implantology of the German Society for Oral Implantology (DGOI). Diagnosis, surgical placement, and the final restoration are planned and carried out by the same clinician.

What is full-arch implant restoration?

Full-arch restoration replaces an entire upper or lower set of teeth (or both) with a fixed bridge anchored to dental implants, a permanent set of teeth that stays in place. We build each arch on six to eight implants and finish it with a full-zirconia bridge, for strength, stability, and a natural look.

The result is a permanent set of teeth that:

  • Stays fixed in place, it doesn't slip, click, or come out
  • Lets you bite and chew with far more strength than a removable denture
  • Looks natural and is custom-designed for your face and smile
  • Helps preserve the jawbone, because the implants stimulate the bone like natural roots

Why we do not do All-on-4

All-on-4 is a protocol that supports an entire arch of teeth on four implants. To make four reach, the two rear implants are tilted, and the bridge extends behind them on cantilevers. Dr. Atalla does not restore arches this way. The reasons are biomechanical, not a matter of taste:

  • Load distribution. Chewing generates hundreds of newtons of force. Spread across six to eight implants placed along the arch, that load is carried the way natural roots carry it. Concentrated on four, with cantilevers acting as levers, it magnifies the stress on bone, screws, and framework.
  • Redundancy. On four implants, every implant is structural. If one fails, the arch usually cannot stay in function, and treatment starts over. On six to eight, the bridge can typically remain in place while a single site heals.
  • Materials. Many four-implant arches are finished in acrylic wrapped around a metal bar, which wears, stains, and can fracture. We finish the arch in monolithic zirconia, a ceramic that keeps its shape, shade, and polish.

Who is a good candidate?

  • Missing all or most of your teeth in one or both arches
  • Wearing a removable denture and frustrated by slipping, sore spots, or a limited diet
  • Living with multiple failing, decayed, or loose teeth that need to be replaced
  • Wanting permanent, fixed teeth rather than something you take out at night

A consultation with 3D imaging is the only way to confirm candidacy and map out exactly how your treatment would work. The number of implants and their positions are a clinical decision made from your anatomy, not a package.

What to expect

  1. Consultation & 3D planning. Dr. Atalla evaluates your jaw with digital imaging and designs your new smile before any treatment begins.
  2. Implant placement & temporary teeth. The implants are placed and a fixed temporary set of teeth is attached, so many patients leave with a complete smile.
  3. Healing. Over the following months the implants integrate with your bone while you wear your temporary teeth.
  4. Final zirconia bridge. Once healed, your custom, permanent full-zirconia bridge is placed, strong, natural-looking, and built to last.

Frequently asked questions

How many implants do you use for a full arch?
Six to eight per arch. Four-implant protocols such as All-on-4 rely on tilted rear implants and cantilevered bridges, which concentrate chewing force. Six to eight implants distribute that force the way natural roots do, and the restoration does not depend on any single implant.
Why a zirconia bridge?
Zirconia is a highly durable, lifelike ceramic that resists staining, chipping, and wear far better than acrylic. It looks natural and is built to last for the long term.
Does the procedure hurt?
Treatment is performed with local anesthesia for your comfort. Most patients describe the recovery as far more manageable than they expected.
How do I care for fixed full-arch teeth?
You brush them like natural teeth and clean underneath the bridge as we show you, plus keep regular checkups.
I have very little bone left, can this still work for me?
Often, yes. With 3D planning, careful implant positioning, and grafting when needed, many patients who were told they couldn't have implants are still candidates. A scan will confirm what's possible.
